Join The LAC Book Club!
Introducing the Lincoln Arts Centre Book Club, a new addition to the program brought to you by two of the LAC’s familiar faces. A chance for students and the public alike to come and talk about all things books; get reading, get writing, get creative. Launching this Autumn!
Studies completed by The Reading Agency in 2024 tell us that young people are reading, especially for fun, less and less, despite the boom of Booktok and similar online spaces since the pandemic. The study suggests that “among young people ages 16-24, a quarter of those have never been regular readers, and 44% of this group are now considered ‘lapsed readers’.”
However, with new and exciting books being released constantly, a buzz of interest still present and the new academic year beginning, we wanted to get students not only interested, but enjoying books again. Having both worked at the LAC for several years now, avid readers and creatives Lou Bright (they/them) and Payslee Chardoux (she/they) want to bring a much needed Book Club to campus, and where better than their ever familiar Cafe Bar.
Lou is a University of Lincoln alumni, completing their BA and Masters in Theatre. They were a pioneer of creativity in their time as a student, founding societies and working alongside fellow creatives to bring to life wonderful shows and projects. They have worked at the LAC for almost 4 years, and are currently an LAC Front of House Supervisor. They continue to bring creative light to the venue and beyond, most often working on cosplay and similar artistic ventures.
A Lincoln local, Payslee received her Creative Writing and English Literature BA at York St John University before moving back home and getting into the working world. Now a fellow Front of House Step-Up Supervisor at the LAC for over 2 and a half years, and a bookseller at Lindum Books on Lincoln’s lovely Bailgate. Her focus is not entirely on work however, a locally published writer and freelance editor, books stay a passion in their life.
Combined, Lou and Payslee have a vision for a new, exciting creative space where club members can express their love for all things literary. The LAC Book Club will meet monthly, with a fresh read chosen each month for discussion, accompanied by writing prompts, and time to get some reading, writing, even group workshopping in. Alongside of course, the wonderful LAC Cafe Bar atmosphere, members can get cosy with a hot drink and their book whilst all this is happening!
Both advocates for diversity and accessibility, Lou and Payslee aim to create welcoming and inclusive sessions for club members. Reads will include stories that feature and from authors across the world, and from all walks of life – open to suggestions too!
