Hourglass

Fri 15th May

A bold new musical about power, time, and the courage to change the course of history.

Book by Rebecca Applin and Susannah Pearse

Music by Rebecca Applin

Hourglass follows a celestial Navigator, tasked with keeping every voyage in time and space on course. Bound to observe but never interfere, she lives among the stars, maintaining an ordered universe — until one ship captures her attention: The Mayflower, sailing from Southampton in 1620.

Drawn into a world of explorers, dreamers, and dangerous hierarchies, the Navigator begins to question the systems she is meant to uphold. Where does power really lie? Who decides how the world should be ordered? And what happens when those structures begin to crack?

Blending historical fact with fantastical fiction, Hourglass draws inspiration from the voyages of The Mayflower, The Hunting of the Snark, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, creating a richly imaginative story filled with mystery, humour, and adventure. With music by Rebecca Applin and book and lyrics by Susannah Pearse, this brand-new musical celebrates courage, hope, and the moment when watching from a distance is no longer enough.

Originally commissioned by the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton.
