Technically Speaking 2025

Thu 16th Jan

Come and be inspired by people dedicated to making technical theatre and stage management more inclusive and accessible for everyone!

In this hands-on event, you’ll consider and reflect on the progress of access software and equipment designed to enhance the theatrical experience and fast becoming a central part of stagecraft, as much as set, costume, lighting, and sound. Whether you’ve experience under your belt or starting out in the industry, this event will offer insights and practical knowledge.

Highlights of the Day:

Keynote Speaker: Michèle Taylor MBE, Director for Change at Ramps on the Moon, will share a compelling provocation, challenging us to think critically about our work through an anti-ableist lens. Michèle has been focused on anti-ableist practice since 1990 and has been instrumental to Ramps on The Moon’s success since 2015. The talk will highlight the need for greater focus on disabled-led practices and innovations, combining Michèle’s professional expertise and lived experience.

Creative Captioning Explorations: Following a lunch break Ben Glover and Will Monks will demonstrate and explore different elements of creative captioning. These practical demos will give insight into how practitioners are creatively adapting technology to better meet their needs and improve accessibility, including hacks, tips and workarounds for existing software.

Ben Glover is a deaf Video Designer and Creative Captioner. He uses interdisciplinary skills in both creative and technical fields to produce innovative and expressive creations, drawing inspiration from his background in theatre, film and computing. His work has been showcased in the West End, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Royal Opera House, The Royal Albert Hall and numerous international festival and venues.

Will Monks is an internationally recognised lighting and video designer whose practice is centred around technology in aid of art and using access tools as creative techniques. Will specialises in creating flow and dynamism in the delivery of Creative Captioning and has been recognised at the Offies and UK Theatre Awards.

Networking Opportunities: Connect with fellow professionals, educators, and students passionate about inclusivity in the arts. Share ideas, experiences, and resources in a supportive environment.

This one-day event is co-designed with the Technical Theatre and Stage Management course at the University of Lincoln.
